Prepare your canine companion for city living and earn the AKC Urban Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title in this comprehensive 4-session course, testing included!

Course Overview

This course is designed to help dog owners train their pets to navigate urban environments confidently and politely. Over three sessions, you and your dog will learn and practice the skills necessary to pass the AKC Urban CGC test, which demonstrates your dog's ability to behave appropriately in city settings.

Session Breakdown

Session 1: Urban Basics

  • Introduction to urban-specific commands and behaviors
  • Practice entering/exiting buildings without pulling
  • Walking through crowds on busy sidewalks
  • Proper reactions to city distractions (noises, movements, surfaces)

Session 2: Advanced Urban Skills

  • Crossing streets safely and under control
  • Ignoring food on sidewalks
  • Interacting politely with strangers in urban settings
  • Navigating public buildings (dog-friendly areas)

Session 3: Final Preparations

  • Review and refine all skills
  • Practice transportation-related behaviors
  • Mock test run-through
  • Official AKC Urban CGC test administration

Session 4: Official AKC Urban CGC Test

  • Administration of the official AKC Urban CGC test
  • Evaluation of all learned skills in a real urban environment
  • Opportunity to earn the AKC Urban CGC title

Prerequisites

  • Dogs should have basic obedience training

  • Well-fitting buckle or slip collar, martingale, or body harness
  • 4-6 foot leather or fabric leash (no retractable leashes)
